A Message From Barack (Not Sponsored by Tony Rezko)
Breaking news from Barack Obama: There exists the distinct possibility that he might be running for president. Why is Barack potentially running? In his own words:
The decisions that have been made in Washington these past six years, and the problems that have been ignored, have put our country in a precarious place. Our economy is changing rapidly, and that means profound changes for working people. Many of you have shared with me your stories about skyrocketing health care bills, the pensions you’ve lost and your struggles to pay for college for your kids. Our continued dependence on oil has put our security and our very planet at risk. And we’re still mired in a tragic and costly war that should have never been waged.
Obviously we cannot hold Barack responsible for “the decisions that have been made in Washington these past six years” because he’s only been in Washington for two years. Health care is expensive, you’ve lost your pension, can’t pay for your children’s college tuition, are consuming too much petroleum, and the nation is mired in a mishandled war. The solution to these problems? Elect Obama. What will he do?
It’s the smallness of our politics. America’s faced big problems before. But today, our leaders in Washington seem incapable of working together in a practical, common sense way. Politics has become so bitter and partisan, so gummed up by money and influence, that we can’t tackle the big problems that demand solutions.
So he’ll make politics bigger and get rid of “money and influence.” Okay, I’m not sure how that’s a solution to the problems you listed, but you’re not part of Washington, so obviously different is better. What’s that about money and influence? Right, Rezko was just a friend doing what friends do.
A change in our politics can only come from you; from people across our country who believe there’s a better way and are willing to work for it.
Years ago, as a community organizer in Chicago, I learned that meaningful change always begins at the grassroots, and that engaged citizens working together can accomplish extraordinary things.
So even in the midst of the enormous challenges we face today, I have great faith and hope about the future - because I believe in you.
If only “the people” can change the country, then why do we need to vote for you (if you run), Sen. Obama? Why not cut out the middle man? Did you say you’re from Chicago, IL, where you’re announcing your possible intention to run for president? Oh, so you’re not from Hawaii or Kansas or Kenya. So you’ve lived there for nearly 15 years (more than a quarter of your life!). I guess that makes you as much an Illinoisan as anything else. Go with that, Illinois is a fine place. Just make sure you clean up that little sex offender problem before you formally announce on the 10th. We’ll be waiting patiently to see what you decide.
